Dragon Flies Phoenix Dances - 10
Chapter 10 – The Past
This time, Long San could not remain calm any longer. He stroked his forehead then started to eat the food.
Anyway, keeping himself busy is the right thing to do.
Although Qin Yayin did not understand the meaning but looking at the situation, she knew it was nothing good. By this time, she had already got over the shock and at this moment, she felt very angry that she had been made fun of.
“Elder Brother, I don’t think today is the appropriate time to meet. It’s better to invite San Gongzi alone for a gathering on another day. There won’t be any other irrelevant people around so it would be more conducive to talk.”
Fengning nodded fiercely. “That’s true. Without the presence of irrelevant people, it’s more conducive to talk. Then I shall bid farewell to Qin Gongzi and Miss Qin.”
Qin Yaying secretly glared at her and then left with Qin Chang.
As soon as the two people left, Fengning immediately pulled her face taut and humphed three times at Long San.
Long San said. “Still humph? What scandalous words did you speak just now and what is that about big scissors? Is that what women should speak about?”
Fengning said loudly. “Didn’t you see that he was taking liberties with me? You didn’t protect and still blame me?!”
Before Long San could even voice his complaints, Fengning had already rebuked him. When he was about to speak again, Fengning threw down her chopsticks and said. “I’m full, I want to go home.”
Seeing that she had lost her temper, Long San no longer felt happy and ignored her. He retracted the words that he had originally planned to say and continued to eat by himself.
Sitting at the side, Fengning glared at him for a while and then said. “I will go back by myself.
“Do whatever you want.”
Fengning then left but after a while, she came back again and said to Long San. “Give me some silver.”
“Buy a pair of big scissors.”
Long San was speechless. He had never met any woman like her who can make others worry for her. He put down his chopsticks and was about to lecture her when Fengning made a face at him. “I am angry with you.” Then she turned around and left.
He stared at the door and after thinking for a while, he decided to continue with his meal. After eating and drinking to his satisfaction, he walked out of Zhenwei Restaurant to find Fengning hanging around not far away. He pretended not to notice and continued to walk on his own. When Fengning saw him come out, she followed him.
Both of them did not speak and after walking for a while, Long San asked. “Have you bought the scissors?”
Fengning pouted and did not answer. She sneaked a look at his hands and noticed he was holding the playthings she had bought earlier. She had forgotten all about them when she left in a huff just now.
Long San said again. “Aren’t you someone with a backbone*? You throw a temper whenever you like and leave whenever you like. After such a long time had passed, why are you still hanging around here?”
(A person with a backbone is a person of strong character and moral integrity who stands firm and is not willing to submit under pressure.)
“Hmph!” Fengning replied. “Of course, it’s regarding proper business.”
Long San stopped and turned around to face her.
“If you still insist on causing this kind of trouble, I won’t take you out the next time.”
Fengning bit her lip and turned her head away stubbornly while Long San stared at her and waited for her reply. Left without a choice, she finally turned her head around and said angrily. “Then as long as I remain your wife for a day, you will have to protect me for a day. In the future, after we part ways it will be none of your business whether I live or die. However, as long as I am still staying in your Long Mansion, you can’t let outsiders bully me.”
She only asked for this much and her eyes showed frankness. Upon seeing this, Long San’s heart was moved and he could not help but nod in response. “Alright.”
When Fengning saw that he was not lying, she finally smiled. She stretched out her hands to take the playthings off his hands and said happily. “Then it’s considered as we have temporarily made up.”
Long San returned the things to her and led her in the direction of the Long Mansion. After walking for a while, Fengning asked. “Long San, was I afraid of water in the past?”
“Shouldn’t be? That means you’re not sure?” Fengning said. “Just now I went to the lake and stood there for a while I felt dizzy. My hands and feet turned weak, my heart raced……I’m very afraid of water.”
Long San replied. “In the past, you used to invite people to swim in the lake, so I can conclude you’re not afraid of water. Now that you are in this state, I think it must be because you had once experienced drowning.”
“Invite people to swim in the lake? Who?”
Does she have friends here as well?
Long San stopped walking and glanced at her before he replied. “My Second Brother.”
Her eyes widened in surprise and after a long time had passed before she stuttered. “Sec…..Second Uncle?”
“That’s right.” Long San nodded.
“Why did I invite him?” She asked foolishly.
Long San answered patiently. “I don’t know about your specific intention. All I know is that as Second Brother is the Head of the Family, your family initially didn’t want you to marry me.”
Fengning was stupefied and froze on the spot. Long San continued to walk forward and after standing in a daze for a while, she silently followed behind him. Both of them continued to walk in silence until they arrived back at the Long Mansion. Long San returned to his courtyard and Fengning followed him.
“Long San…….Long San……..” She followed him into the study and asked sadly. “Am I a woman who didn’t abide by the rules?”
Long San sighed. “Fengning, it will be good enough for us just to investigate and get to the bottom of this matter. It’s useless for you to pursue the past. I believe you are not malicious to my family at present and I also promise to let you return to your maiden family once this matter is over. It would be best for you to try to remember the things related to the theft of the treasure. Other matters will only just increase the burden of your worries, so why persist in asking?”
“Of course, I have to ask. All of you know what you were like in the past but I don’t. Of course, I have the right to know who I am and what I had done. And, everything could be related…….the things that I had done might be connected to the theft of your family treasure.”
Fengning paced back and forth.
“For example……you and I could have conspired to seize your family treasure but it was not good for you to reveal yourself, so I was sent to steal. You and I could have pretended to be in disharmony to pull wool over people’s eyes. Or for example…….I had accidentally learned about an unspeakable secret of Second Uncle, so he fabricated an illusion that I seduced him to make everyone hate me and then set a trap to have me killed. Or for example……..”
“Fengning!……” Long San was dumbfounded as he listened and quickly interrupted her. “Don’t make false assumptions. Everything you said is wrong.”
She stopped talking and looked at him eagerly. Long San stroked his forehead. “Your imagination is truly vivid.”
“Anything is possible.”
“That’s excluding the family chaos that you guessed. We, the three brothers, share deep feelings, so such things won’t happen.”
Fengning pouted, plonked her butt on a chair, and said sadly. “That’s right. None of you will do such things and I’m the only one who is a bad person. I also feel that I won’t do such a thing but I still did it. Wasn’t I caught red-handed by you all?”
“Fengning, we also want to find out why you did this, so that’s why we have to sit down together and discuss this.”
“Then first of all you have to tell me what I had done in the past.”
Before Long San could speak, she added. “Whether they are good or bad, you have to give me all the facts.”
Long San pondered for a while and then nodded. “Then you will also have to agree not to pursue all past matters and you can’t bring up past issues again.
“Alright.” Fengning replied without hesitation and Long San began to speak.
“At that time, when your family came to our residence, we didn’t agree to fulfill the marriage agreement but your parents showed a tough unyielding attitude. They brought out my grandfather’s written contract together with the token and made a huge fuss, insisting that my Eldest Brother marry you. That time, my Eldest Brother and my Eldest Sister-in-law were already married, so naturally, my Eldest Brother was unwilling. However, your family wanted my Eldest Brother to divorce his wife. When they didn’t succeed, they were agreeable to let you hold the status of a wife with the same rank as my Eldest Sister-in-law.’
Do her parents not love her at all?
Long San continued. “My Eldest Brother has always been tough when dealing with matters and he was firm in his refusal to marry you. Your family had no choice but to go to our ancestral grave and created a ruckus. Second Elder Brother had to come forward to solve the problem and only then did they discover that Second Elder Brother was actually the Family Head. So they turned around and asked Second Elder Brother to marry you and naturally, Second Elder Brother was also unwilling. That time, the attitude of your family gave all of us an odd feeling and it made us feel that your family came because of the Long Family’s power. The matter came to a deadlock. Initially, I thought your family didn’t have the intention to fulfill the marriage contract, so I proposed that I will marry you…….otherwise, the marriage contract would be declared void. However, I didn’t expect your family would agree at the last minute.”
“Do you think my family would just stop when you said that?” Fengning mocked.
“I had indeed underestimated them.” Long San continued. “After the marriage was confirmed, Momo Yu was very angry and felt that our Long Family had been bullied. Before the wedding day arrived, I had to leave home for a trip, so she said she would take care of the marriage and will ensure that the marriage would not happen.”
Speaking up to this point, he paused and looked a little hesitant.
Fengning continued to ask. “After that, how did Momo Yu make sure the marriage was unsuccessful? But didn’t we get married in the end?”
Long San had no choice but to answer. “Momo Yu sent all of us three brothers away and on the wedding day, she said that we were occupied with major issues and could not be present. So the only choice was to use a pig to represent the bridegroom in the wedding ceremony and if the Feng Family was not happy with the arrangement, the wedding would be called off.”
(In ancient times, in this kind of special situation, a cockerel would normally be used. Special circumstances like these will only occur if the groom is unable to make an appearance due to a serious illness or is about to pass on or he is already dead. )
Fengning opened her mouth wide in surprise. “Pig?”
Long San felt a little embarrassed and nodded. Fengning asked loudly again. “Was it a real pig?” Long San became even more embarrassed and did not speak.
Fengning slapped on the table and said. “All of you can actually do this kind of thing?!”
“Fengning……” It seemed Long San wanted to say something but was stopped by an imposing wave of Fengning’s hand.
She stood up and paced back and forth while muttering to herself.
“What were my parents thinking, they even agreed to this? What about me? How could I have agreed? And I also performed the marriage rituals? I should have just stabbed that pig dead and hung it up in the wedding hall. Let its blood splash three feet away all around and let its blood flow like a river so that you can’t clean the floor even if you scrub it for a whole month. How could I have allowed you all to bully me like that?”
After muttering to herself, she narrowed her eyes at Long San. “Did I stab that pig?”
“Were the marriage rituals performed?”
Fengning was so angry that she thumped on the table. “Was I actually that useless?”
Long San said. “If you also find this unbelievable, then you should be able to understand why we think that it shouldn’t be a simple matter for you to marry into our family.”
Fengning said. “The only thing unbelievable to me was that I didn’t slaughter both the pig husband and the human husband!”
Long San stared at Fengning and she returned his stare.
“Do you still want to listen?” Long San asked.
“Yes.” She said with gritted teeth.
Before Long San could speak, Fengning hurriedly asked. “Did that pig husband sleep with you in the same room later?”
“Fengning!” Long San shouted.
She stood up abruptly and said loudly. “Why didn’t you hang up a plaque on the entrance of your courtyard with the two words ‘Pig Pen’?” She just could not swallow this humiliation!
Long San became agitated and slapping on the table, he stood up. “Just now, who was the one who agreed not to pursue past matters nor bring up old issues again?”
“It was that pig’s wife! If you’re not satisfied, you can look for that pig and reason with it.” Fengning said in a loud voice. “Who would have known that the old issues would be so brilliant? It is all thanks to my amnesia, otherwise, all of you would still be rolling and kneading me like a piece of dough. Do you think I, Fengning, is someone so easy to bully? If I had done something wrong, I will take responsibility, but all of you are still putting on the appearance of a victim. Now, I understand the reason for all the things I did. Since all of you treated me this way, is it possible for me not to retaliate?”
“Can you be reasonable?”
“Yes.” Fengning nodded vigorously and then she really started to talk reasonably. “Ask yourself……. regardless of whether you like me or not and regardless of whether you were willing or unwilling, how did you treat me after the marriage?”
The next instant, Long San was stunned and after a long time, he squeaked out a reply. “We never treated you badly regarding your food and accommodation, and there are servants to serve you…….”
Fengning waved her hand to interrupt him and then asked. “Do you know the color of the clothes I like to wear?
He looked at what she was wearing at this moment…….it was aqua blue.
“Do you know what dishes I like to eat?”
An image of the dishes from Zhenwei Restaurant just now rose in Long San’s mind. In the past, he indeed had not paid her any attention when she was in the mansion.
Seeing that he was speechless, Fengning let out a humph and asked. “Do you know the playthings that I like?”
Long San lowered his eyes to look at the kite and little wooden doll that she had placed on the table.
Fengning shouted at him. “You don’t know anything and you are my husband! How are you fit to be a husband? You have the nerve! I feel ashamed for you!”
The more she thought, the angrier she became, and turning around, she ran off. Just as she rushed out of the study, she met Long Er and threw a fierce look at him.
Long Er was inexplicably baffled by her look.
When Long Er came in, he asked. “What’s the matter with that crazy woman again?”
Long San was still in a daze and had not gathered his thoughts. It was obvious that she was the one who wronged him but why did she feel ashamed for him? The most important was what she had said and he was unable to refute her. He raised his eyes to look at Long Er, then shrugged and felt a little helpless. “She lost her temper.”
“I know she lost her temper. Her voice was so loud that it could be heard from afar.”
