Chapter 6 – Two Drunkards
The man screamed miserably and knelt on the ground. He hugged his belly, curled up into a ball, and could not even utter a word. With her hands on her hips, Fengning kicked him again and repeated the words the man said just now.
“Rejects the face given to you? Even dare to bully this grandmother? Do you who this grandmother is?”
The man struggled to raise his head and asked in a hoarse voice. “Who are you?”
Fengning was caught by surprise……….he really asked?
She raised her head. “Not telling.”
She seemed to hear a chuckle and sensed someone approaching her from behind. When she turned around to look, she found it was the young swordsman that she just met at the city gate. She was about to speak when the drunk man who was thrown on the ground earlier on, charged towards her. She caught a flash of silver light from the corner of her eyes and quickly moved two steps away to dodge him.
The swordsman raised his hand and instantly drew out the long sword tied to his back. With a flick of his hand, the sword shot with a swish towards the drunk man. The hilt of the sword hit hard on the drunk man’s wrist and the dagger in his hand was knocked down.
Fengning was stunned. She was thinking that if she is to make the same move as this man did, will it be possible for her to hit people with just the hilt of the sword? She did not know but she knew that this swordsman is an expert.
When the swordsman had succeeded in hitting the dagger from the drunk man’s hand, he walked over to pick up his sword. The drunk man who was hit by the long sword landed on the ground and kept pushing himself backward to get away.
Fengning looked at the swordsman up and down cautiously. His eyes were spirited, his face was as clean as jade and his clothes were neat. With a glance, it could be seen that the fabric used was of high quality. His hair was neatly combed, the sheath and handle of his sword were polished brightly and the boots on his feet were also clean. Compared with the two drunk men who intended to bully her, he was completely different. Fengning knew in her heart that this man and those two men were not together and he should not be harboring evil intentions.
She raised her fisted hands in salute and said to the swordsman. “Thank you.”
The swordsman also looked at her and then said. “Are you alright?”
Nodding her head, she looked down at the two men on the ground trying to run away and she shouted. “Don’t move!”
The two people stood still immediately and secretly exchanged looks. Suddenly, they turned around to attack Fengning, thinking to use the tactic of ‘attack and retreat’ then seize an opportunity to make their escape. Fengning did not panic and countered their attacks. The swordsman also stepped forward and intercepted one of the men. The two people joined forces and after only a few moves, they taught the drunk men a lesson until they cried miserably. Without daring to run anymore, the two men knelt on the ground and begged for mercy.
Fengning thought for a while and said. “These two men are evil and they can’t be let off just like this.” She went over to kick them and said fiercely. “Climb to those stakes over there.” There were two big wooden stakes at the side of the street used for hanging lanterns and flying flags and it was also where the traders secure their horses while they go about their businesses.
The two men looked at each other in a panic but they still crawled over to the stakes. Fengning again said. “Take off your clothes.” This time the two men stopped moving but she raised her hand, acted as if she was going to hit them, and then shouted out a word. “Off!”
The two men trembled and quickly took off their clothes. Fengning turned her head around to look at the swordsman and he was frowning as though he did not understand her intention.
Fengning said to him. “This Big Brother*, can you lend a hand?”
(Big Brother is a general term and a courteous way of addressing a male when one does not know the other party’s name. A female is usually referred to as ‘Big Sister’.)
The swordsman moved over slowly as Fengning tore the two men’s clothes into strips of cloth. Then she handed the strips of cloth to the swordsman. “Big Brother, please help to tie them up.”
However, the swordsman did not take them from her. He looked at the two men and then looked at Fengning. She frowned and pointed at the two drunk men. “They bullied a woman on the street and it was me. If it was changed to another weak woman, won’t that be a calamity? Besides, we only met this one time……perhaps, they might have done many bad things before this. Isn’t it good to let them display themselves in the street?”
When the two men heard, they started to shout that they were good people and were only drunk at present.
The swordsman said. “Now, I realize who they are. What you said made me recall that I have seen their wanted posters in the other provinces. They had indeed done a lot of despicable things.”
The two men shuddered when they heard his words. At the same time, Fengning was stunned.
Can there be such a coincidence?
Suddenly, she reacted and jumped up. “Then I have done a good deed! I’ve helped to eradicate harm for the people, ha, ha………”
The swordsman felt her reaction was very interesting……and found it unexpected and amusing including her show of weird expressions. After letting out a few light coughs, he looked at the two men sitting on the ground who were only wearing their mid-garments and said to Fengning. “Turned around with your back to me and walk two steps forward.”
Fengning looked at him suspiciously but he waved for her to hurry up. She thought about it for a moment and then obediently walked two steps farther away with her back facing him. Then she heard the swordsman say to the two men. “Take off your pants.”
Fengning burst into laughter instantly. She could hear the babbling resisting voices of the two men behind her and then heard a few screams as if they were beaten. Then everything quiet down behind her and she could only hear some rustling sounds like clothes being removed.
Then she heard the swordsman say. “Stretch out your arms.” Fengning was very curious…….why do they have to stretch out their arms? She secretly turned her head around and saw the swordsman using a sword to cut the two men’s arms. Amid the two men’s screams, he said. “Don’t peek, they are not wearing pants.”
Fengning hurriedly turned her head back but still glanced over involuntarily. She had already seen the four white flesh-colored thighs and as she rubbed her eyes, she muttered. “If you didn’t mention it to me, I wouldn’t have noticed. Why did you have to bring it up?”
The more she thought about it, the more she felt she had suffered a loss, so she said loudly.
“This Big Brother, help me to give them a few more kicks!”
As soon as her voice fell, she heard the sounds of kicking movements behind her. The two drunk men screamed once again. Fengning was so happy that she started to giggle.
It was initially a miserable moonlit night but now it seems the night had become interesting.
As Fengning looked at the shadow at her feet that was cast by the moonlight, she gave herself some encouragement. In fact, everything has a chance to turn for the better and she will have the chance to find back herself.
Fengning waited with her back facing the men and heard the swordsman behind her said to the two drunk men. “You……use his blood to write the words ‘I am a beast’ on his body……and you do the same on him as well. Use his blood to write the words ‘I am an animal’ on him.”
When Fengning heard him, she could not help but laugh and laugh. She was thinking that this person is truly righteous and funny.
In the end, the two drunk bare-legged men with evil intentions wearing the bloody suits of self-cursing words were hung up and tied to the wooden stakes in the street. With hands covering her eyes, Fengning secretly peeked through the gaps of her fingers and felt that this method of dealing with them was really great.
As soon as the swordsman turned around, he noticed Fengning’s actions. He did not expect her to be so mischievous so he reprimanded her helplessly.
She chuckled and said. “Big Brother, you’re indeed a good man.”
The swordsman raised his eyebrows and standing in the moonlight, he looked handsome and dashing.
However, as a married woman, Fengning naturally would not take notice of this and waved goodbye to him.
“I have to leave. Till we meet again.”
She was in a good mood and bounced towards the direction of the city gate. After standing for a while, the time finally arrived and the city gate was opened wide. Fengning then followed the farmers and stepped out of the city under the starlight.
After walking for a while, she found that she did not know the way, so she stopped a farmer and asked. “Uncle, which direction lies the Liang River?” The farmer pointed it out to her and Fengning trotted towards the direction. After traveling for a long time, she finally saw a swift-flowing river.
She stood on the high banks of the river and looked at the rapidly flowing water. Suddenly, darkness flashed through her mind…….a scene of swirling cold river waters sweeping her away…… She closed her eyes, her body trembled and instantly, she felt very dizzy. Quickly, she squatted down, hugged her knees, and waited for the dizziness to pass. When she opened her eyes again, the scene in front of her eyes remained unchanged but her legs were still a little weak, so she simply sat on the ground. She looked at the river and tried hard to think but unfortunately, she could not recall anything this time.
The surroundings were so dark that it was frightening. The sky was still dark and only the dim moonlight was shining bleakly and miserably on this place. Fengning’s heart also had the same bleak and miserable feeling.
When someone came near to her, Fengning turned her head to look back and saw the same swordsman she met in the city earlier on.
“Why are you here as well?” She smiled.
The man sat down beside her a little distance away. “This is not a safe place.”
Fengning hugged her knees and looked at him. “Big Brother, you are truly a good person. I’m fine. As you have seen, bad people won’t be able to bully me.”
The swordsman asked. “What are you doing here?”
“I was told I had an accident here so I came to take a look.” Fengning said honestly. Somehow, she felt that this swordsman had a good affinity with her and did not feel awkward when talking to him.
Perhaps it was because someone was accompanying her, she felt spirited, so she jumped up and walked downstream along the river. As expected, the swordsman stood up and followed behind her. Walking with both her hands behind her back, she searched as she walked and the swordsman asked softly. “What are you looking for?”
Fengning replied. “Looking for myself.”
This meaningless answer did not provoke the swordsman in asking further questions. Fengning thought to herself that it was good. She needed someone to accompany her but did not want anyone to probe and question her.
Then she came to a place where a forest was next to the river bank and the river bank was very low. Fengning looked at the river water with a little fear but she still squatted on the bank to take a look.
This kind of muddy bank could indeed allow people to lie down with half of their body on the shore and half soaked in the water.
The smell of the green grass on the ground and the damp mud……. The smell resembled the smell that she caught when she woke up that day. At this time, the horizon had already turned pale and the moon and stars were about to disappear. Fengning lifted her head to look at the sky and suddenly she lay on the grassy ground. She looked at the faint moon……then closed her eyes…….opened them again…….and then closed them again.
She lay there for a long time…….until the sky had turned completely bright. There was only emptiness in her mind. Except for the initial feeling of struggling in the darkness and rapid-flowing water, which left her in fear, she could not recall anything at all.
The swordsman only watched her quietly at the side and did not speak.
The longer she lay there, Fengning became sadder and sadder.
She can’t remember anything, what should she do? No one likes her, no one appreciates her, no kind relatives, no loving husband……she has nothing. She doesn’t like the Long Mansion, she doesn’t want to go back but what can she do? She doesn’t even know what kind of person she is, where else can she go?
As she looked at the sky, she felt aggrieved and helpless.
She sat up and rubbed her eyes that were beginning to feel sour. Then she got up and with her head lowered, she walked dejectedly in the direction of the city gate while the swordsman quietly followed behind her. Fengning was submerged in her sadness and did not speak to him. Like this, both of them entered the city gate one after the other.
The soldier, who spoke to Fengning earlier on, saw her coming back from a distance. He had a great shock when he noticed that she was covered in mud and had a sorrowful appearance.
He stammered and asked. “Mi……Miss, what’s the matter with you? Can it be your elder sister…….really couldn’t wait for one more sichen?”
Fengning shook her head and her sad expression was obvious. The soldier assumed that his thoughts were correct and felt very regretful.
“Aiya, Miss, I’m very sorry.……. If I had known I would have put in my best effort to plead on your behalf. I thought……. Don’t be sad…….don’t blame me, I didn’t expect it would turn out like this…….”
The more he was like this, Fengning felt even more guilty and waved her hand repeatedly. “Big Brother, it’s not like that. I was the one in the wrong. I lied to you to get out of the city.” As she talked, she rubbed her eyes sadly. “I am the one who is sick, not my elder sister. I don’t know what to do, I couldn’t find it. I am sure to be scolded when I go home. Big Brother, I was wrong, I shouldn’t have lied to you. Don’t fault me.”
The soldier was confused and scratched his head. He could not understand what she meant.
What is that about being sick, couldn’t find it, and being scolded? Her ramblings were messy and disorganized but he heard clearly that her elder sister was alright. Seeing that the girl was so sad, it did not seem right for him to say anything more, so he just waved his hand.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Look how dirty you are now, be careful not to catch a cold. It’s better to return home as soon as possible. Don’t be afraid of being scolded. Your family is still family. Hurry home.”
Fengning rubbed her eyes again and said. “Big Brother, you are such a good person.” The soldier waved at her again and both of them considered it as having said goodbye to each other.
Fengning walked dejectedly one step at a time along the street as she looked at the unfamiliar street scene and the shops that she had no impression of. She sighed in her heart. The swordsman was still following behind her. She walked and walked and then suddenly, she turned around and said to him. “Big Brother, I feel very sad.”
“Ah?” The swordsman’s expression looked a little defensive.
Fengning pretended not to notice and said. “When I feel sad, I’ll feel hungry. When I waited for the city gate to open in the middle of the night, I was already hungry, so I have been hungry since then.”
The swordsman let out another ‘Ah’ and appeared even more surprised.
Fengning said calmly again. “But I had snuck out of the house secretly. I don’t have any money on me and I’m far away from home. I’m so hungry that I won’t be able to walk home. Can you lend me some silver for breakfast? Later, when I return home, I’ll repay you.”
This time, the swordsman did not blurt out an ‘Ah’ anymore, and instead, his mouth was opened wide as he looked at her dumbfounded. He did not expect that she was able to spout this bunch of nonsense when she was in a bad mood.
Fengning blinked and looked at him innocently. To her, it is reasonable to eat when one is hungry.
The swordsman quickly withdrew his expression, then nodded and said. “Alright.”
