Chapter 7 –Breakfast Treat
The next instant, Fengning showed a brilliant smile with her big eyes curved and pointed her finger at a breakfast stall in front.
“Then let’s go!” Before she spoke to him, she had already pinpointed a target.
When the two of them arrived at the stall, Fengning’s stomach was already growling loudly and the swordsman threw a side glance at her. Fengning showed him an expression that said – ‘See? I didn’t lie.’
The swordsman coughed slightly, turned his head away, and tried to hold back his smile.
The breakfast stall was set up on the roadside and had only two small tables. The food sold at the stall was relatively simple like wonton, rice porridge, baked biscuits, and steamed buns. Fengning ordered a bowl of wonton, a bowl of rice porridge, two baked biscuits, and a tray of steamed buns. After she had ordered, she asked the swordsman. “Big Brother, what do you want to eat?”
The swordsman was surprised. “Didn’t you also ordered mine just now?”
“That was what I wanted to eat.” She blinked calmly at the surprised face of the swordsman and asked patiently again. “Big Brother, what do you want to eat?”
He also blinked at her and said slowly. “A bowl of wonton and two steamed buns will be enough.”
She turned to the woman who was running the stall and said. “Auntie, add another bowl of wonton and two steamed buns.” After speaking, she added a sentence. “My Big Brother here has a small appetite.”
The swordsman turned his head away and pretended to look somewhere else but his slightly shaking shoulders revealed that he was laughing. Fengning did not mind, found a seat at the small table, and sat down without any courtesy. Breakfast was delivered quickly and Fengning smiled as she ate with happiness. While she ate, she said to the swordsman. “One must be contented with everything. It’s good to have both, a life and a full meal.”
After she finished speaking, she was momentarily stunned. “Yi, who said those words to me?”
The swordsman looked at her and asked. “Don’t you remember?”
Fengning shook her head. “I am sick and don’t remember anything. However, I remember Big Brother is a good person and I remember that I owe you money. I will definitely return you the money.”
She continued to eat sullenly and after eating for a while, she called out loudly to the woman who was selling breakfast. “Auntie, the food you cooked is very delicious!”
The praise was shouted out loudly and her satisfied expression showed that the breakfast was indeed delicious. A few passers-by could not help but stop and bought some food. This made the auntie so happy that she wrapped two marinated eggs with lotus leaves and gave them to her. “Miss, Auntie wants to give you these eggs as a treat. They are wrapped up and won’t break. You can take them home to eat.”
Fengning smiled brightly and thanked the woman, then winked at the swordsman proudly. After they had finished eating, the swordsman went to pay and when he came back to the small table, Fengning said to him in a low voice. “Big Brother, give Auntie the money for the eggs as well. She worked hard and had to work her fingers to the bone and that child who is helping her is still so young. Both of them are wearing tattered clothes, so their family situation shouldn’t be good. We can’t take advantage of her.”
The swordsman also imitated her serious expression and said in a low voice. “I wanted to give her the money but she refused.”
Fengning lowered her voice even further like she was a thief. “Then put the money here secretly. When she comes to clear the bowls, she will be able to find it.” The swordsman threw a glance at the auntie then nodded and acted accordingly. As soon as both of them walked away, they heard the auntie’s shout. “Miss!……..”
Fengning looked back and realized that the auntie had found the copper coins and was calling out to her with her hand raised. Fengning hurriedly pulled the swordsman along and ran away. When they had run far away and were out of sight, she burst into loud laughter.
She bounced away happily and just as she moved a few steps forward, the swordsman quickly pulled her sleeves. “Aren’t you going home? Why are you going to the city gate again?”
Fengning was taken aback and exclaimed. “Aiya! I forgot to buy breakfast!”
The swordsman was shocked and his voice became louder. “Then what was that you ate just now?”
Her memory loss can’t be so bad that it had come to this stage, right?
“No, no……I was thinking that the soldier guarding the city gate worked so hard, he couldn’t have eaten breakfast. That Auntie still has several trays of steamed buns that we can buy and give to him as a treat. But just now, I was eating so happily that I forgot all about it.”
Fengning stared at the swordsman. “Big Brother, don’t worry. I will pay you back the money. Can you help me go and buy those steamed buns?”
“No.” The swordsman gave a very simple reply. “Just now we had snuck away so secretively, it will be embarrassing to go back. I’ll give you the money and you can buy them yourself.”
“No, I’m thin-skinned. It’s embarrassing to go back.”
“Then you mean I’m thick-skinned?”
“Definitely thicker than mine.” Fengning grinned. “My meaning is that with a glance, Big Brother is someone who has wide connections, knowledgeable, and is experienced in this kind of matter. You’re sure to be better than me in going back to buy the buns, therefore, you should go.” She placed her palms together and begged sincerely. “Go, go……I owe you a favor and I’ll certainly repay you.”
The swordsman’s expression relaxed and Fengning seized the opportunity to push him forward. “Go, go……everything depends on you. You’re such a good person. For the auntie and her grandson to be able to close up their stall early and return home to rest and for the soldier to fill his tummy and do a good job of guarding the city gate…….everything depends on you.”
She turned the act of buying steamed buns into such a great charitable act that the big brother swordsman was eventually forced to return to the breakfast stall helplessly.
Fengning hid in a corner and watched as the swordsman went back to buy the buns with a look of embarrassment. The auntie pushed and shoved with him and wanted to charge him a lesser amount. Fengning saw the swordsman blushed and seemed to disagree with her. Then he snatched the buns, threw down the money, and ran away quickly.
“Gongzi!……. Gongzi!……..” This time, the auntie called out to the swordsman.
Fengning could not help but burst into loud laughter. When the swordsman ran past her, he grabbed and pulled her along as he ran. While they were running, he said to her. “You can still laugh! Still laughing?!”
The two people ran directly to the city gate and Fengning gave the buns to the soldier. Once again, she apologized for lying to him. When the rest of the soldiers saw that someone had brought them breakfast, they were very happy and repeatedly said their thanks.
After having peace of mind, Fengning’s mood became better. She waved goodbye to the soldiers, turned around, and ran towards the swordsman.
She smiled brightly and with the sun shining behind her, it gave her a dazzling look. The swordsman waited there with his arms folded across his chest and with his eyes squinted slightly, he seemed to be thinking.
Fengning ran up to him happily and said proudly. “Come, follow me home. I’ll get the money to repay you.” She continued to feel happy and walked with the sun shining behind her. Her whole body was dirty but she did not seem to care at all and was strolling contentedly like a cat after a full meal.
After walking quietly for a long time, Fengning suddenly said. “Big Brother, I don’t feel so sad now. You see, I ran away from home all night but I met you, such a good person……….and the soldier who stands guard at the city gate is also a good person and the auntie who sells breakfast is also a good person. In this world, there are so many good people, it’s so good. Someone once taught me that as long as I treat others sincerely with my heart, eventually, I will be rewarded in return. I feel these words are true. Although my husband’s family doesn’t like me and it must be because I had done bad things in the past but now, I’m different. If I treat them well, they will surely change their minds, right?”
The swordsman did not speak and Fengning continued. “Aiya, I can remember these words but I can’t remember who told me that. The person who taught me this must be a good person. Big Brother, I miss someone but I don’t know who, and that empty feeling is truly bad.”
She did not expect him to respond to her. The words she spoke were incoherent and confusing, so it would be strange if he understood her. But as long as there is someone beside her, listens to her, and lets her speak her mind slowly, she feels at ease.
She babbled a few more words and when she saw the Long Mansion right in front of her, she suddenly remembered that she could not just jump over the wall with this big brother swordsman.
At this moment, she felt a little embarrassed. She stopped her footsteps, lowered her head, and kicked the little stones at her feet as she said in a small voice.
“Big Brother, my husband’s house is right here but currently, they don’t like me very much. Therefore, when I lead you inside later and you don’t get your money back quickly, don’t feel offended. After I explain to them, they will pay you. No matter how I still have some jewelry which will surely be enough to pay for the breakfast.”
Before the swordsman could answer, Fengning asked again. “Oh, right……after such a long time, I still haven’t asked for Big Brother’s name yet.”
“My surname is Long……”
“Aiya, what a coincidence!” Fengning exclaimed. “My husband’s family is also surnamed Long.”
The swordsman sighed. “I know.”
“Oh……” Fengning lowered her head. “You also know that this is the Long Mansion, right? His family is very famous. I……I……I’m not a bad person……honest.”
She did not know what else to say, so she just walked to the door of the mansion dejectedly. “Let’s go…….anyway, I still have to go back sooner or later.”
Before they could reach the entrance of the mansion, the door suddenly opened and a group of people, about a dozen guards and servants, came out. When the person leading the group of people saw Fengning, he shouted. “No need to search! Isn’t this Third Madam? She is here!”
At this moment, Fengning wanted very much to dig a hole and bury herself inside it. It was truly very shameful. Just as she was about to turn around to explain to the swordsman, the guards and servants suddenly bowed their heads respectfully in greeting. Fengning was shocked and then she heard them call out loudly. “Third Master!”
Fengning looked at them foolishly and then after a long while, she slowly turned around to find the swordsman was receiving everyone’s greeting calmly.
Facing Fengning’s surprised expression with her big round eyes and wide opened mouth, he said softly. “I am Long San……”
Fengning stared at him like a fool and after a long time, she asked in a daze.
“You’re Long San?”
“Is your name Long Fei?”
“Your Elder Brother is Long Teng and your Second Brother is Long Yue?”
“There is also a fierce Steward Momo in your mansion?”
“You’re married and your wife is called Fengning?”
“Is it me?”
“Do you recognize me?”
“Then why didn’t you say anything when you met me at the city gate?”
“Initially, I wanted to tell you but you didn’t give me a chance.”
In fact, when they met by chance at the city gate, he was thinking that she was caught red-handed and waited to see her surprised and panic-stricken expression. However, he did not expect her to wave at him calmly and told him that the city gate was not open yet and to wait. That had in turn surprised him greatly.
But he could not tell her all this because, at this moment, she seemed very sad due to his deception.
“But later, there was so much time, why didn’t you say so?”
Long San pursed his lips, not knowing how to answer her. At first, he wanted to wait for her to expose her flaws, so he played along with her. Later, when she walked out of the city gate looking so helpless, he suddenly believed she had indeed lost her memory. At that time, he did not know whether it would give her a scare if he told her that he was Long San. After that, she was so happy that he did not want to tell her anymore. In short, there was never an appropriate time.
Fengning stared at him with red eyes and said in a dull voice. “When I was injured and sick, you never came to see me.”
Long San felt ill at ease.
Is she going to talk about this in front of the mansion?
Fengning looked sad and fragile. “Why did you ignore me?”
Long San felt helpless and still did not speak. Just as he was about to persuade her to go home and talk this over, he suddenly saw the little woman had a change of expression. With a fierce look like she was bearing her fangs and claws, she rushed up to him and gave him a fierce kick on his calf.
“You’re a bastard!……a big liar!” After kicking and cursing him, she decisively turned around and went in quickly, leaving him standing at the door.
The rest of the servants looked at Long San with their mouths wide opened in astonishment. Long San looked at them with a straight face and then asked softly. “Very idle?”
Everyone shook their heads and then they dispersed decisively and quickly.
Long San stared at the retreating backs of the servants and sighed.
What happened to that woman?
Long San entered the mansion. At first, he wanted to return to his courtyard but on second thought, he went to look for Fengning. It had been a long time since he last came to Fengning’s courtyard. Although they lived in the same big residence, each of them had their own courtyard and they seldom met.
Before reaching her courtyard, he could hear Momo Yu’s voice coming from a distance.
“You’re outrageous! As a wife and the dignified Third Madam of the Long Family, what reason is there for you to leave the mansion in the middle of the night and loiter outside? You were so sneaky, what was your purpose for going out?”
“I went to the riverside to see if I could remember anything.”
“Huh, who will believe your words? Even if you wanted to go to the riverside, why do you need to sneak out in the middle of the night?”
When Long San entered the courtyard, he saw the grievous look on Fengning with her pouting lips and her head was turned away showing her refusal to answer. He walked over and called out the word ‘Momo’.
When Momo Yu saw that he had returned, she was so happy that she held on to his hands and scrutinized him.
“You’re finally back! You didn’t encounter any trouble, did you? Does your head still hurt?” She seemed to have changed into another person. There was kindness in her eyes and her heartfelt concern for Long San was evident.
Long San glanced at Fengning and she stared back at him blankly……seemingly envious. When she noticed he was looking at her, she quickly turned her head away.
Long San’s heart jumped and he said to Momo Yu. “I’m fine, my injury has long healed. How can I be so fragile?”
Then he said to Fengning. “You can go back into the house.”
