- Chapter 1: - I'm Gonna Have A Sister?
In the dimly lit living room, I sipped my cup of noodles quietly.
My father was home today, which was quite unusual.
“Hey, I’m thinking of getting married again, what do you think?
My father suddenly spoke.
“I’m not a kid anymore, so you can do whatever you want dad. I mean, are you sure you’re going to be able to handle marriage and all that with you being so busy?”
My father was a professional photographer who travelled around the world.
He was rarely home.
“I’ve been leaving you alone , and making you feel lonely. I thought it would be nice to have a family. She has a daughter over there. She’ll be your sister, if that’s okay with you?”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll be fine.”
“I see, thank you.”
This was what an ordinary conversation between a male parent and his child look like.
I was told that my mother passed away soon after I was born.
Since then, my father raised me single handedly.
So he never complained, even if I came home late or didn’t come home.
“Are you free next Saturday?”
“I don’t have a part-time job, so I’m free.”
“Then let’s go and meet them on that day.”
I agreed to my father’s suggestion.
“I’m giving you an allowance, so you don’t have to get a part-time job, okay?”
Every month, my father gave me more than enough money to pay my bills.
“I’m old enough to earn money on my own.”
After finishing the conversation, I got back to sipping the rest of my cup of noodles in silence.
Almost a week had passed since that day.
Today was the day of the meeting with my father’s second marriage partner.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?”
I put on my suit, which was unusual for me.
My father was also wearing a double breasted
My father drove us to a coffee shop near the train station in a neighboring town.
“Why are you nervous?”
“I don’t know.”
We arrived early and waited inside.
A few minutes after my dad and I entered the coffee shop, two women looking like mother and daughter came in.
One of them was a high school girl.
The father stood up and slightly lifted his right hand.
The woman nodded her head in response.
I guessed she was my father’s second wife.
“Oh, thanks for coming.”
They sat down in the seats facing me and my father.
“I’ll introduce you. This is my second marriage partner, Misaki-san; and this is her daughter, Sara-san. This is my son, Haruki.”
My father introduced me to both of them.
“It’s nice to meet you. I’m Misaki, your father and I are getting remarried.”
She smiled as she said this.
I thought about how beautiful she was.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Haruki.”
I returned the greeting.
“Here, here. You should greet him too. He’s going to be your brother.”
“Uh-huh. It’s nice to meet you, I’m Sara… .”
Sara then bowed her head.
The insanely beautiful girl looked a little shy.
I was a little, no, quite a bit, taken aback by her appearance.
“It’s nice to meet you too.”
This was the encounter between Haruki Tojo and his sister, Sara Tojo.
