I’m the City Lord of the Last Days - Chapter 4.2
Song Xingcheng was suddenly torn. Before his city could develop, he still needed to rely on existing resources to survive. Furthermore, he had come to He Qianshan’s place to gather information and acquire weapons. He Qianshan could provide both weapons and valuable experience in dealing with the situation. Now, he was even planning a supply run. Following He Qianshan seemed like an excellent choice, so Song Xingcheng quickly changed his mind and agreed, saying, “Thank you, He Ge. I’ll go with you!”
In his heart, Song Xingcheng was thinking, “Don’t worry, He Ge. I’ll take advantage of you for now, and when I’ve established myself, I’ll have your back!”
However, He Qianshan only saw the young man smiling brightly, unaware of Song Xingcheng’s inner thoughts.
He Qianshan intentionally kept Song Xingcheng at his estate. Although he was puzzled by his own extraordinary experiences, he was confident that with his advanced knowledge of the plot and his talent for collecting weapons, he could keep Song Xingcheng safe.
Initially, He Qianshan had only wanted to provide a haven for Song Xingcheng. However, as he watched Song Xingcheng practicing shooting with such dedication and commitment, he realized that the apocalypse wouldn’t end soon. He understood that excessive protection might not be the best course of action. So, he sought Song Xingcheng’s opinion on whether he wanted to join an expedition outside. Song Xingcheng readily agreed, displaying remarkable courage.
Back on the ground floor, the dining room was set with a sumptuous lunch prepared by He Qianshan’s assistant, Han Qinmin.
In the morning, after realizing the situation was dire, He Qianshan quickly searched the office building, collecting a large number of firearms and weapons. He then organized a team of employees who were also working late and had families to return home. Finally, he brought two single assistants back to the old He family residence in the Ya Mu Villa area.
He Qianshan didn’t usually stay at the old family residence. The vast estate was typically maintained by a butler and four servants who took care of daily tasks.
When the disaster struck, two of the servants had turned into zombies, and in the chaos, they even managed to drag away the chef. By the time He Qianshan returned home, the estate was left with only the butler and a cleaning lady who had managed to hide and survive.
With weapons in hand, He Qianshan dealt with the three zombies. Then, the butler and the cleaning lady began cleaning up the mess, while the two assistants prepared lunch together.
When Song Xingcheng arrived, the old He family estate had already entered the cleanup phase. Song Xingcheng, who was unaware of the previous situation, only saw the other four people who had been at the estate all along.
The butler and the cleaning lady had pale and troubled expressions. They greeted Song Xingcheng with a word and then retreated to their respective rooms to rest. They couldn’t yet come to terms with the immense change and had neither the mood nor the appetite for lunch.
In contrast, Song Xingcheng, He Qianshan, and the two assistants were in much better condition. They enjoyed their lunch calmly and quietly.
The dishes were all home-cooked, but one couldn’t help but admit that Han Qinmin’s culinary skills were top-notch!
They had dishes like garlic chicken wings, crispy pork, black pepper beef, and oil-braised prawns. Everything was incredibly delicious, even a simple stir-fried vegetable dish was exceptionally tasty. Song Xingcheng couldn’t stop himself from eating and had to pause only when his stomach became full. He felt embarrassed by his appetite and decided to send over some of his own stored food as a way of showing gratitude, allowing him to continue enjoying these meals in the future.
After lunch, the four of them moved to the living room. He Qianshan’s other assistant, Zheng Nianhao, placed a layout map of a supermarket called “Duo De”, three kilometers away, on the table. He then outlined several routes to get there.
Song Xingcheng was astonished when he saw the huge map and the detailed supermarket layout. He couldn’t help but exclaim, “Did you plan this thoroughly? Were you already planning to raid the supermarket? Maybe even before the apocalypse?”
He Qianshan’s expression froze briefly at Song Xingcheng’s exclamation. Then, he explained with a wry smile, “It’s our own supermarket, so I’m quite familiar with it.”
This revelation left Song Xingcheng even more surprised. He wondered if He Qianshan had brought him along to raid his own supermarket. Such honesty and straightforwardness made it difficult for Song Xingcheng to feel comfortable looting supplies.
Seeing Song Xingcheng’s wide-eyed and startled expression, He Qianshan couldn’t help but reach out and twist his little head. Then, he turned his attention to the map and advised, “Remember the supermarket layout well. In case of emergencies, don’t run into dead ends. Write down a list of the supplies you need and give it to Zheng Nianhao. We’ll search for them together later.”
Song Xingcheng quickly complied. Luckily, he had recently read a lot of survival information, so he had some idea of what supplies they might need. He soon wrote down a long list of items and handed it over to Zheng Nianhao for categorization and tallying, as per He Qianshan’s instructions.
During this time, Han Qinmin welded a protective iron mesh around the windows of the off-road vehicle parked in front of the villa. Even if the car windows were open, zombies wouldn’t be able to approach the interior.
He Qianshan, with the assistance of the butler and the maid, organized a batch of professional outdoor clothing, all made from ultra-high-strength fabric. These clothes were resistant to ordinary cuts and stabs, and in the current situation, they provided better protection against being scratched or bitten by zombies than regular clothing.
He Qianshan picked up a set of dark green clothing, held it up to Song Xingcheng, and gestured. If it was the right size, he pushed it into Song Xingcheng’s arms, saying casually, “This set is safer and more convenient for movement. You can wear it over your clothes for added protection.”
Song Xingcheng, with a smile in his eyes, thanked him. He knew he was somewhat vulnerable, so adding extra layers of protection was more than welcome.
After half an hour, everything was ready, and He Qianshan signaled that the operation was about to begin.
Under the watchful gaze of the butler and the maid, the four of them, fully armed, walked out of the villa.
This time, all four of them rode in one off-road vehicle, with Han Qinmin driving, Zheng Nianhao in the front passenger seat, and He Qianshan and Song Xingcheng in the backseat.
Han Qinmin was solely focused on driving, while the other three were responsible for killing any zombies that approached and protecting the vehicle.
Sitting in the backseat next to the front passenger seat, Song Xingcheng tightly gripped the gun in his hand. His eyes were fixed on the outside, and he quietly regulated his breathing to calm his rapidly beating heart.
After driving just a few hundred meters, the four of them spotted a zombie wandering on the tree-lined road in the distance.
He Qianshan raised his hand to signal a slowdown and pointed at the zombie, saying to Song Xingcheng, “You try to attack it, don’t hesitate. They are no longer the same as us; they are the enemy!”
