Mountain and River Pillow - 4
The composure of the man in front of her made Chu Yu feel assured. She didn’t make out her future husband’s appearance, but judging from the hand he offered, he probably wasn’t too unsightly.
Chu Yu was led into the sedan chair by him, carefully the entire way, as if she was a delicate woman who needed extra care.
She had never had such an experience. Having accumulated thirty years of life; in everyone’s mind, she had always been a lady gallant through and through, one who neither needed pity nor pampering.
Gu Chu Sheng had always treated her with respect and courtesy, even to the point of dispassion like between a boss and his subordinate.
Chu Yu sat on the sedan chair and secretly lifted the curtain to gaze at Wei Jun in front of her.
However, the man was already riding ahead, and she instead caught sight of Wei Yun who was guarding on one side. He noticed her movements and curled his lips towards her, with a knowing humor in his eyes. It was like he had caught her with one hand in the cookie jar.
Having been seen through by someone, not to mention a child, Chu Yu couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed. She quickly dropped the veil and sedan curtain, sitting back obediently.
Having settled down, Chu Yu began brewing. It had been on this day that the border news had arrived in Hua Jing in the previous life; though, the specific time Chu Yu knew not.
The border was currently in grave danger, and the Wei family was the most suitable candidate to go on the expedition. It was difficult for her to come up with a pretext to stop the Wei from embarking. Wei Jun could try to stay under the excuse of being a newlywed, but the others really had no reason.
The solution was to prevent the cause of their defeat.
Rumors had claimed that it was because of Wei Zhong chasing down the remaining soldiers, only to fall into a trap. This time, if the Wei family stayed defending the city, there should be no such disaster.
Chu Yu thought about it, listening to the horns and drums outside for a long time before the sedan finally stopped.
Shortly after, she heard the sedan door being kicked open, and, amidst the laughter, the red silk was handed over to her again.
This time, Wei Jun did not stutter and said with a smile, “Miss Chu, I will guide you in.”
Chu Yu held the red silk and looked at his feet, letting him pulled her forward.
She walked steadily, and Wei Jun peppered careful reminders. The hush voices of the Wei family’s children were flouncing around her. They were small, but audible enough.
Many of them were half-grown children, who said energetically, “I heard that Sister-in-law is pretty.”
“Little Seventh said she is very beautiful.”
“Can she be more appealing than the unrivaled beaty Chu Jin?” ”
“Seventh has very good eyes. She must be prettier than Chu Jin!”
…
Chu Yu couldn’t help but smile when the Wei family’s frank words reached her ears. Wei Jun also heard it and was a little embarrassed. He knew that Chu Yu practiced martial arts and must have caught that. So, helping her step over the brazier, he whispered, “Don’t be angry, I will scold them later.”
Chu Yu couldn’t bite back a chuckle at this, ” It doesn’t bother me, I like that they’re like this.”
When Wei Jun heard her voice, even though he hadn’t seen Chu Yu’s appearance yet, he thought that such a girl must be very good-looking.
Anticipation bloomed in his heart as he took Chu Yu to the main hall.
The two kowtowed to the heaven and the earth according to the ceremony official’s commands.
The journey went smoothly. Chu Yu was thrilled and looked forward to the life with the Wei family a little bit more.
She was very calm inside. A kind of relaxed joy spread all over her when she finally straightened up.
She wasn’t married to Gu Chu Sheng. The past would not repeat itself.
She stood in front of Wei Jun, wanting to lift her veil and take a look at the man in front of her. She had a feeling that Wei Jun was half a head taller than her, and intuited that he was a gentle and well- mannered man.
Chu Yu stood still, and someone next to her came up to help her back to her personal room. Wei Shu came forward and shouted, “Brother, go lift her veil quickly, don’t bother to go drinking!”
“Yes, yes,” the other young masters shouted, “Brother, go and lift the veil! We don’t need you around for drinks!”
“Go, go, go!”
Wei Jun flushed and said to them, “Follow the rules and head aside. Move!”
No sooner had he said that than he became nervous that Chu Yu would be displeased. He turned his head and whispered, “Miss Chu, go and wait a while…”
“My lord will be there soon?”
Chu Yu whispered. The voice was soft and clear. Wei Jun’s inside felt all mushy as he murmured, “Yes, it won’t take long.”
“Then I have your word,” Chu Yu said in a solemn tone. “No matter what happens, you must come back as soon as possible.”
Chu Yu felt these words were a bit out of nowhere the moment they left her lips, so she hushed, “I await my lord’s return to lift the veil.”
Wei Jun was a little confused at the beginning. Then it dawned on him that Chu Yu might not like the veil. He whispered, “If you don’t like this veil, when no one else is around, just take it off and wait for me. The Wei family is not a stickler for rules.” After saying that, Wei Jun got worried that Chu Yu would assume he wanted to stay out for longer, so he added, “I will come back as soon as possible.”
Chu Yu nodded and was helped back to the room by others. Wei Jun turned around and began to greet the guests.
After Chu Yu entered to her room, she sat on the edge of the bed elegantly.
She really didn’t like the veil, but she enjoyed the Wei family. Wei Jun showed his affection for her, so she was willing to do the best she could to reciprocate.
While perching on the bed, she got a little bored and began to let her mind wander.
She was not a person who held grudges. Since what had happened in her previous life didn’t happen in this one, she didn’t want to weigh herself down over it. Gu Chu Sheng had left Hua Jing, and she herself had married into the Wei family. The past with Gu Chu Sheng and Chu Jin was not something important now. It was of the essence to look forward.
As of this moment, the Wei family was indeed as easy to get along with as the rumors had it. Her life under the Wei’s roof should not be too difficult in the future. After Wei Jun came back later, she would try to see if she could get him to stay, being newlywed. Even if she couldn’t, she would try to follow Wei Jun to the front line. And if even that was impossible, she would remind them not to chase the remaining soldiers. Perhaps nothing would happen.
As long as the Wei family could overcome this, she and Wei Jun could live out a good life in the future. She knew how things would change in the next twelve years and had the ability to protect her family from tragedies.
The Wei family doing well, Wei Yun probably wouldn’t become the Murderous God in the future. Gazing at this young man today, she saw a child still, as happy as a lark. Once grown, he should also be a gentle general like his brother, shouldn’t he?
Chu Yu mulled; her thoughts wandered far away.
Having stood by for a long while, the maid next to her observed her motionlessness and came up to ask, “Young Madam, do you need a light snack?”
“No…,” Chu Yu said warmly. Right then and there, the neighing of a war horse was heard in the distance, as well as the sound of hurried footsteps. Chu Yu’s heart tightened; she suddenly flipped her veil up and walked outside.
Shocked, the maid stepped forward to halt her, anxiously said, “Young Madam, where are you going?”
Chu Yu did not dare to act too strange; after all, if others knew about her knowledge of the future, she was afraid that she would be set ablaze for being a demon.
She suppressed her anxiety, frowned and said, “I heard the sound of war horses outside. I’m afraid something happened. I want to go take a look.”
“Young Madam, don’t worry,” the maid laughed, “The Master will take care of it. Everything is fine, Madam, just wait here.”
“I’m anxious.” Chu Yu pushed the maid away and walked out, leaving with a stony face, “I have to go see for myself.”
The maid was pushed aside by Chu Yu, who opened the door and hurried out.
She didn’t know the layout of the Wei manor, so she could only walk in the direction of the noise.
At this time, the footsteps outside became more and more rapid, and there were more and more people. The maid was hot on Chu Yu’s heels, her face full of fear, trying to pull Chu Yu away, “Young Madam! Young Madam, you haven’t had your veil lifted yet, you…”
Before she finished speaking, there were rapid footsteps outside, and then Wei Yun appeared from around the corner.
He was wearing armor, and his young brows were overwhelmed by solemnity.
Chu Yu stopped dead in her track and clenched her fists. Wei Yun looked at the woman in front of him who was donning a phoenix crown and a shawl. He met her knowing eyes, decisively knelt down on one knee, gave a military salute to Chu Yu, held up a jade pendant with both hands, and said cooly, “Urgent report from the front, my lady. The Young General has been ordered to go on an expedition. He ordered me to hand over this jade to his lady and tell her that he will return in triumph, so there is no need to worry.”
After hearing this, Chu Yu saw the jade pendant held by Wei Yun, so polished and smooth from being brushed and stroked, obviously something that man always had on his body.
She raised her hand to grasp the jade pendant and looked outside, “Where is Wei Jun?”
“The Young General has set off.”
Wei Yun’s voice became softer, as if he also knew how devastating a blow it was for the woman to have her groom go off to war on her wedding day. He contemplated a bit and was about to comfort her when he saw Chu Yu dashed out abruptly.
She ran extremely fast, her clothes flying in the wind. Wei Yun was stunned for a moment; upon realization of what she was doing, he rushed after her, fretting, “Sister-in-law!”
Chu Yu didn’t say anything. She ran all the way to the gate, raised her hand, grabbed a soldier, threw him off, seized his horse and galloped out.
The Wei family was flabbergasted and didn’t react until Wei Yun caught up, following Chu Yu’s example, snatched a horse and gave chase to her.
“Was that the Eldest Lady?”
“That’s the Young Madam?!”
While everyone was in shock, Chu Yu was extremely calm.
The September wind was chilly. She was pushing her horse so fast, it whipped against her face like a knife.
Wei Yun followed closely behind her; never had he suspected that his sister-in-law’s equestrian skills were so superb.
He struggled to call out, “Sister-in-law! Stop chasing. There’s no use trying to catch them! My brother will come back, don’t worry!”
Chu Yu gave no reply. She knew the route out of the city that led troops from Hua Jing to the north. To get there, you must take the northern gate. She rode around a road and saw the galloping troop from the mountain. She swooped down the hillside with her horse under her.
Wei Yun was so frightened, his blood ran cold, wondering how he was to explain to his father and brother if something happened to his sister-in-law here.
He gritted his teeth and rushed after Chu Yu. He immediately saw her hurtling directly towards the main road, forcing an entire troop to stop on her lonesome.
The Wei family members were astounded when they saw the sudden appearance of the woman in red, then spotted Wei Yun trailing behind. Wei Zhong stepped forward, spoke somewhat incredibly, “Seventh, what is the meaning…”
“Father-in-law,” Chu Yu gave a military salute to Wei Zhong and said respectfully, “Please excuse this daughter’s rudeness.”
At her words, the faces of everyone in the Wei’s army showcased all flavors of expressions.
Looking at the wedding-robe-donning person and Wei Yun, they had had an inkling. Unbelievably, it indeed was Chu Yu who came.
But behind Wei Zhong, Wei Jun was completely befuddled.
He then saw Chu Yu’s eyes falling on him. The autumn rain was a ceaseless drizzle. Chu Yu held the reins in her hands, the wide sleeves of her bright red wedding robe were stained by the dusty rain.
She raised her head slightly as well as her voice in askance, “Where is my husband, Wei Jun?!”
The Wei army all lowered their heads, not daring to look up.
Only Wei Jun nervously urged his horse forward, and said strenuously, “I… I’m here.”
