Sha Qing - Chapter 53.2
Arc 5: Luna Twin Islands
Chapter 53.2: Amidst the Darkness (2)
Leo said in a quiet voice after a short while, “I’ll wake you up at ten minutes past seven.”
“Good.” said Sha Qing, and then there was further no movement.
Five minutes later, Leo heard his long, regular breathing, indicating that he had fallen asleep. For those suffering from long-term insomnia , this ‘fast-sleep’ skill is hateful, and Leo was of course, jealous: A killer can sleep like a baby because he feels no guilt for what he has done; or, because his heart is too cold and numb to touch of death.
Such a person… This man is such a person, however, he still made me have a hint of expectations and to never give up the hope of letting him correct his ways ……
Leo suddenly suspected that he was not far from losing his mind.
He fell into a half-asleep, half-awake state in the middle of his jumbled thoughts, looking at his watch from time to time…
Four hours later, he got up to rouse Sha Qing.
Below the rocks where the resting point was, the water was already showing signs of rising therefore they had to hurry and leave. When they returned the way they came, Leo was lucky enough to find the flashlight he had lost during the fight. It still worked, and was a much better light source than the makeshift torch, which saved them some of their time.
Just as they saw the light in the entrance of the cave, a loud and indistinct noise came from outside.
The two immediately hid behind the large rocks.
When they peered between the gaps in their limited angle of sight, they saw several hanging barrels of firearms, camouflage pants, and German Shepherds on a leash walking on the beach.
“The hell, they already found this area. I wonder if we can find a way to slip out.” Sha Qing turned his head to listen to the sound of the tide and frowned, “In half an hour at the most, this hole will be filled with water.”
Leo ventured a few steps forward, carefully observing the movement on the deserted slope behind the beach.
He then spoke in a serious tone: “There are a lot of people up there, and the sky is bright. We can’t confront them with just two soaked guns, so we can only wait ……. They just sat down, and seem to be preparing to rest and have some breakfast or something.”
Sha Qing also crawled over to take a look, “They’re in the perfect spot, high above the open beach, with 100% visibility on the surrounding areas. We’ll become a target as soon as we show our heads, damn it!”
Leo repeated his observations several more times, mentally calculating possible escape routes, and finally had to admit, with disappointment, that could do nothing but stay in the cave, because once they come out, they’ll definitely get spotted. In fact, they were already fairly lucky that they still haven’t gotten discovered in the cave yet.
“Well, it’s time to choose how to die,” Sha Qing said, “Agent, do you want to be killed by a bullet, or drowned by seawater?”
His tone was as calm as if he was just asking, “Do you want tea or coffee?”, which made Leo’s gloomy mood lighten up quite a bit.
With a shrug, he replied, “In terms of pain, the former would probably be lighter, but I’d rather feed the fish than let my dead body fall into Yavre’s hands.”
Sha Qing nodded and said, “Listening to the way you speak, I can pretty much imagine how perverted that guy is. Well then, let’s return to the cave.”
Leo raised his eyebrows as Sha Qing took his hand again, “Can I trouble you to die first? I don’t want us to be mistaken as two people who died together in the name of love in case our bodies are found tangled up and can’t be pulled apart1.”
“Ah, I don’t mind at all.” The other man said as he tightly held onto Leo’s hands as they walked towards the cave where the water level was rapidly rising.
After a few minutes, they couldn’t stand on their feet anymore and therefore had to swim inward against the tide. “Let’s talk about your Plan B.” Leo inquired in a matter-of-factly way as he buckled against the stone wall to secure himself from being swept away by the current.
“Why are you so sure that there’s a Plan B?”
“I’ve been chasing you for over a year, and I’ve dreamed of you day and night more times than I could count. They say that ‘a crafty rabbit has three burrows2’ , and you are much more cunning than a rabbit.”
“It’s an honor to have an agent think about me day and night and know me so well. From that perspective, us dying together is also another way to fulfill your wish because, you see, you finally caught me!” Sha Qing smiled and shook their hands together. “Going back to the topic, there is indeed a B, but unfortunately, it’s not exactly a plan— it’s more like taking chances.”
“I observed this cave yesterday, and the place where we rested before was a natural space formed by the intersection of two large rocks, which seemed to be higher than the sea level during high tide …… but I’m not sure about the more specific details or whether it could squeeze on it when the water level is at its highest..”
“But that’s the only chance we have right now, isn’t it.” Leo said, “Let’s go and try our luck.”
The water was getting closer and closer to the roof of the cave, so they had to dive in some sections then press their noses up against the rock wall for air.
The section in front of them was extremely narrow.
They used to crawl over with hands and feet before, but now that they were completely immersed in the water, they didn’t know whether they could go through it in one single breath.
Sha Qing hesitated for a few seconds before releasing his hand, to pat at Leo’s shoulder solemnly: He hesitated for a while, released his hand, and solemnly shook Leo’s shoulder:
“I know you’re a better swimmer than I am, so if I can’t get into the next ventilation point, please give me a hand; but if in the end, I still couldn’t make it, then just forget about me and move along. As they say, Let it go when it’s time to let it go.”
Leo looked at his vague face in the darkness. He didn’t know how to respond to that at all.
Sha Qing didn’t wait for Leo’s answer either. He just took a deep breath then plunged into the water.
The tunnel seemed longer than I thought, Leo held his breath until his lungs throbbed and his fingers felt a crack somewhere between the surface of the water and the stone wall at the top of the cave.
After finally taking another long breath, he yelled, “Sha Qing, in here!”
There was no movement in the water. Leo’s heart tightened and he dived in immediately.
The battery-depleted flashlight flickered, emitting a final flicker of light before dying out.
But as luck would have it, Leo managed to see the figure of Sha Qing with that last ray of light.
The latter seemed to have been unable to suppress his instinct to breathe, futilely covering his nose and mouth with his palms, as strings of bubbles rose from between his fingers.
He was about to drown.
Leo quickly swam over. One of his hands removed Sha Qing’s palm that was covering his mouth, while his other hand supported the latter’s back neck, and then blew air into the man’s airway using his own mouth.
Sha Qing clung onto him like he was a life-saving straw, taking air from his mouth.
Then, the supposedly emergency measures… ran off-course a few seconds later…
Despite the fact that only half of their heads were above water, the initial exchange-of-air turned into a feverish kiss amidst lung pain and shortness of breath.
Their brains couldn’t think, as the stormy kiss had drowned all their reason and rationality.
All they could hear was each other’s heartbeat, and the call of burning desire within their bodies…
When the water finally flooded their eyes and their lungs had become overwhelmed by the insufficient amount of oxygen, they had no choice but to part their lips.
They lifted their heads above water and they gasped for air in exhaustion and exhilaration , as if they had just gotten reborn after death..
btw, please don’t take it the wrong way if I explain some things that was quite clearly obvious/understandable to you guys (except for the idioms, because that’s mandatory). I leave explanations on sentences that made me double-take a few times before being able to finally make some sense/connections out of it. My brain just buffers when translating sometimes, and I was thinking that maybe some of you is like that too (￣▽￣*)ゞ.

- In case it’s not clear: they are most likely to be found “tangled up” because it’s an instinct to hold on to something while drowning, and others would have a “hard time pulling them apart” because bodies stiffen up some time after death. pfft Leo is being savage in a polite way lmfao
- a crafty rabbit has three burrows(idiom) = a sly individual has more than one plan to fall back on
