They kissed until they couldn’t breathe, and separated from each other with difficulty.
Sha Qing rested his chin in the nook of Leo’s shoulder, still gasping, “Reason reminds me it’s time to go before your sense of professionalism returns to normal—before you stick a needle into my neck as well. You still have a syringe hidden up your sleeve, don’t you?”
The agent cradled the back of the serial killer’s neck. The latter’s re-dyed dark hair and the smooth, beautiful light wheat skin seemed to have a magical power that made his fingers sink deep into it. “If you’re afraid of being caught and sent to prison by me, then stop it all for good.”
“Even if I stop now, I’d still have to go to prison, right?”
“Yes, but surrendering can be exchanged for a reduced sentence.” Leo dropped a kiss on his brow and said gently but firmly, “And then, I’ll wait for you to come out.”
Sha Qing’s shoulders shook up under Leo’s palms, accompanied by an uncontrollable low chuckle, which then turned into a loud laugh. He lifted his face so that the other party could clearly see his expression full of mockery, masking his deep disappointment in his heart: “Agent, you should be awarded the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer Medal by the federal government in recognition of your continued dedication in doing your duties under such circumstances.”
“I know this is difficult for you to accept, but–”
“—But I don’t want to add luster to your resume, to be one of the achievements represented by that medal.” Sha Qing pushed Leo away and stepped back until his thighs topped the open window, “It seems like this is the end of our cooperation. By the way, let me remind you: the remaining five members haven’t left the clubhouse yet because Yavre’s madness and paranoia have reached the point of recklessness, and he suspects that in addition to you, there are other undercovers amongst those people. He’s holding them under house arrest, completely hidden from others. Shall we have a contest to see whether you can find them first or get killed by me?”
After leaving those words, Sha Qing fell backward, his figure instantly tumbled down the fifth-floor window.
“Damn it!” Leo cursed as he rushed forward. He grabbed the window frame to look down, only to see the other party digging through the stone gaps of the outer wall, leap nimbly, then disappear from his field of vision like a gecko.
The dark-haired agent immediately took off his jacket, pulled out a knife and without hesitation, he cut along the seemingly freshly healed small wound on the inside of his right arm. Using the tip of the knife, he picked out a tiny blood-stained signal transmitter, which was previously hidden inside his body to avoid the risk of being found during a body search.
Two minutes later, the FBI’s special operations team, code-named “Game Reserve”1received a GPS satellite signal from a Pacific island hundreds of kilometers away, and upon decrypting, it was identified as coming from a signal transmitter held by an undercover agent.
“The target is 8 degrees 33 minutes south latitude, 161 degrees 10 minutes west longitude. Assault team, move in!” At the order of the agent in charge of backup, three AV-8B Harrier fighters, two CH-47F Chinook heavy transport helicopters full of more than a hundred armed soldiers, and a Burke-class destroyer from the naval base immediately set-off toward the target location.
Sha Qing, who just made it outside the clubhouse’s wall, quickly leaped into the nearby bushes when he heard some rustling sounds from the depths of the grass. He immediately drew his gun, and upon pointing it in the direction where the noise came from, he saw Danielpoking out half his head and whispering, “Hey, it’s me, it’s me!”
“You haven’t left yet?” He thought that this guy, who tends to set the helm upon seeing the wind2, had long since hidden in some dark corner, or simply holed up near the airport or the docks waiting for an opportunity to escape.
“Then I would have had to find transportation.” Daniel looked around and secretly rejoiced, “Where’s the cop? Got caught? Hung up?”
Sha Qing glared at him and didn’t answer.
Daniel said wittily, “Anyway, you got separated, right. Then we should withdraw as soon as possible. I have a foreboding feeling …… These two islands are going to be big bad luck.”
Sha Qing subconsciously touched the protrusion on his trouser pocket and hesitated for a moment.
“What are you still hesitating for?” Daniel urged, “Look, you’ve almost had your fun, and my money is—uh well, money… money can be earned later, right now it’s about saving your life, brother!”
“There are still five people that haven’t been removed from my list.”
Daniel made the gesture of praying and looked at him with a holy and sincere face: “Please give those five lost lambs a chance to reform, for the sake of our Father who is in heaven.”
Sha Qing gave him a slap on the back of his head, “Don’t make that goosebump-inducing face, it doesn’t suit you at all!” He pulled out a lavishly decorated purple mobile phone from his pocket (that belonged to Yavre, which he had slipped into his pocket after using it to fool Oliver earlier) and expressed a regretful look, “I was going to arrange an ending that best matched their crime ……”
“That’s just too troublesome, how about leaving this tiring job to God?” Daniel suggested in a whisper.
“Too bad time didn’t allow for it. It’s like dropping a stain on a beautiful drawing; I’ve never rated myself lower than an A on my work performance, and now I’m going to be pulled down to a B because of this blunder.” The killer sighed in regret.
“Just a passing mark is enough,” Daniel reassured feebly.
“You know my style, ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’, I really wouldn’t want to make an exception for these five scum if it’s not the last resort.”
“Now is the time of ‘last resort’!”
Sha Qing shrugged helplessly and dialed Oliver’s number using Yavre’s phone.
More than twenty minutes later, three Harrier fighter jets were the first to arrive over Luna Island. The ground command center at North Island Airport placed an eviction warning after the radar scanned for anomalous flying objects, only to be blasted directly into the sky by two Maverick missiles.
A violent explosion shook the entire island, and clubhouse guards swarmed out of the building then looked in the direction of the airport in panic.
Leo took the opportunity to leave Yavre’s bedroom and slipped into his study to contact the support center – as the personal landline of the club’s top leader, he was confident that no one would dare to monitor or tamper with the phone.
“Hey, old buddy, how are you?” His partner, Rob, said on the other end “Congratulations on your successful completion of the mission! A Chinook helicopter and a destroyer are also on their way. You just have to wait safely until we see you… Wait, we have a situation according to the fighter pilot: there is an aircraft taking off at the small airport on the south island—is that our target trying to escape?”
“No, Yavre is still within my control.” Leo glanced at the closed bedroom door. The ultimate target of this mission was still lying unconsciously on the bed inside that room. The medicine injected into him wouldn’t kill a person, but side effects such as unconsciousness, dizziness, and vomiting were inevitable.
“That’s strange… I’ll send a Harrier over to check it ou— it’s the Luna Club’s helicopter! A high-level personnel must be preparing to flee! I’ll have the fighter jet make a forced landing-”
Just as Rob’s voice fell, a muffled thunder-like boom came from the distant sky. Leo put aside his microphone and rushed to the terrace, only to see a violently burning afterglow falling from the southeast sky.
Is it the club helicopter? Leo frowned. He went back to the room, then picked up the microphone, “You shot it down?”
“No, the pilot didn’t even do anything !” Rob hurriedly explained, “It somehow exploded on its own, and nearly affected our plane!”
Leo was silent for a few seconds and finally said, “Double check the personnel on the helicopter, I suspect ……”
“It’s nothing. It’s too early to draw any conclusions.”
“Leo, is there something you’re not telling me?” His sniffy partner said suspiciously, “Tell me your current location and I’ll send someone to meet you right away.”
“No rush, haven’t you heard the saying: ‘The eye of the storm is calm instead.’ I’m going to stay here and wait to catch the one witness who knows the most about the inside story.” Leo finished and hung up the call.
