Wolf's Temptation - 23
Catch a Wolf with a Blowgun
Xu Bei laid in bed for a whole two days, never getting up from bed save for going to the bathroom or eating something.
Long ago, he had begun to think that the thing may no longer be in that old bastard’s possession. This old fool is a gambler, anything that he can sell for money never stays on him for more than a week. If it weren’t for the fact that he was too old to meet the baseline criteria, he might have already sold off both of his kidneys.
He went looking for him only in order to ascertain where he had come into possession of it.
What creates more of a headache for him now is that whether or not that thing was still in his possession, Ban Datong would come looking for him no matter what. He can’t go on hiding like this. Besides, if it weren’t for Ban Datong’s sick and twisted tastes and his obsession with playing chase with him, he doesn’t know how many times he would have been a goner by now.
Killing is not something you can do casually. Ban Datong is no fool, but killing someone like Xu Bei doesn’t really pose any risk. The friends he has are few and far in between, and he is about as good as dead to his family…
He can only guarantee his safety to the highest degree if he gets that thing from Ban Datong.
But that thing as it is now is nothing but empty words spoken from the mouth, which poses a bit of an issue.
Lian Da Pao’s formal name was Lian Jun, he was a gangster born and raised in the Western District. In the early years, he made his fortune by stealing and cheating. After that, his life of crime turned into underground operations. With a shake, he transformed into an avid collector overnight, he could frequently be found collecting a variety of jades and stone antiques. Anything and everything he puts his eyes on finds its way to him one way or another
Feeling vexed, Xu Bei turned over onto his stomach and rested his leg over on the back of the little wolf lying next to him. It’s not that Lian Da Pao won’t sell off the thing in his hands, but whether or not he sells it, the price wouldn’t be something he could afford…
“Huhu, ah, your father’s head is going to explode. Let’s just get some money and run away.” Xu Bei brushed his leg back and forth against the thick white fur of the little wolf. “But with that being said, if we were to run away we’d also have to hide from Ban Datong…”
Xu Bei holds an intimate understanding of how truly difficult it was to evade Ban Datong on foot. Money wasn’t much easier to get ahold either, or else he wouldn’t have gone to Ban Datong to take out such a high-interest loan in the first place.
He scratched the little wolf’s head and closed his eyes: “Forget it, I can’t think, just go to sleep.”
Xu Guangrong took a picture in the mirror, the injury on his neck wasn’t a big deal. Just slap on a few band-aids and all would be well. He stood in the living room and looked at the clock. After five o’clock, everyone in this family had gone to bed.
He carried a bag, and tiptoed over to the TV display cabinet, pulling the drawer underneath open, he felt around under the drawer, he finally ran into the envelope that was pasted under the drawer with adhesive strips with his hand and tore it off, not caring to look into how much money was in it. Walking with light, controlled steps, he made his way to the doorway.
As he passed by the door to Xu Ling’s room, he slowed his steps down to a near stop and listened, making sure that there weren’t any signs of movement before moving on forward.
The leg he had raised had yet to touch the floor before the door to the room suddenly opened. Xu Ling stood at the threshold of the door and looked at him, his words were biting cold: “Put the money down.”
Xu Guangrong’s calf cramped up a bit, he turned his head to look at Xu Ling: “Dad has to go handle some pressing matters…”
“I didn’t ask where you were going, I asked you to put the money down.” Xu Ling pointed to the envelope in his hand.
Xu Guangrong’s face fell to the unsightly side. Although he has never been one to have any reservations about taking money from home, he nevertheless got a bit of a hit to his ego when called out by his grown-up son with this kind of approach. He inwardly let loose a strong of curses in his heart, fuck, his temper is becoming closer and closer like Xu Bei’s with every passing day!
Before Xu Guangrong could even think of a way to diffuse the situation, Xu Ling had already taken a step forward and took the envelope from his hand: “Why was my brother looking for you that day.”
“How would I know?” Xu Guangrong replied without a second thought, “Your brother, that scum, you can’t believe a word he says…”
The latter half of Xu Guangrong’s sentence was cut off, because Xu Ling had closed in on him, the anger simmering in his eyes made a tingling numbness wash down his scalp: “What is it, do you want to follow in your brother’s footsteps and give your Laozi a slashing, ah!”
“I don’t know what’s going on between you two, but if something happens to him because of you…” Xu Ling stared at him for a pause, walked over, and opened the door, “You, get out.”
There weren’t anymore chocolates, Xu Bei searched the whole place upside and down but still came up empty-handed.
He was a little depressed and made an appointment with Qiao Qian and Ye Minmin to meet up today. Qiao Qian intended for him to bring Lang Jiu along and ask Minmin to help him examine his body to see if there was anything physical that differentiated him from regular people.
Now that the chocolate is gone, he either goes out with the little wolf, buys the chocolate, and has him transform outside after eating it, but he didn’t know how he would control the timing of events, or he will go out and buy chocolate and come back by himself, but he wouldn’t be able to be at ease leaving the little wolf all by itself at home…
“Son, come out with me to buy chocolates,” After stewing it over, Xu Bei came up with a third plan. He kicked the little wolf lying lazily on its stomach as he put on clothes, “I will take you back to eat after playing with Uncle Qiao.”
The little wolf didn’t so much as move on the floor. Xu Bei stooped down and pulled at its ears, it merely pushed Xu Bei’s hand away with its paws, laying on the ground just as motionless as it was before.
Xu Bei was somewhat affronted at this display. Normally, as soon as he spoke of going out, nobody could be more ecstatic than this little thing. It’d run off to the kitchen with a chocolate in his mouth, today was a bit off.
“Hey, Lang Huhu, get up, we’re going out to buy chocolates, taking a walk…” Xu Bei dragged the little wolf up from the ground by force, “What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?”
He pressed his hand up to the little wolf’s head, yielding no results, he then reached out to the little wolf’s stomach and felt over it. He felt that there were no discrepancies with its normal temperatures, he also lifted back its eyelid and looked for a moment, he even pried its mouth open and examined it. Nothing was wrong.
“Let’s go, don’t throw a hissy fit, ah, be careful, Laozi will skin you, your dad has been depressed for these past two days.” Xu Bei opened the door and walked out.
As soon as the door opened, before Xu Bei had even taken a step past the threshold, the little wolf suddenly jumped up from the ground and made a mad dash over before latching its mouth onto his trouser leg. Xu Bei held himself steady on the door frame as he pulled his leg away. The little wolf didn’t let go, pulling him back with its paws braced against the floor. It was a pity that the underside of its paws was covered in fur and it found itself in an inescapable loop of slipping and sliding on the hardwood floor.
“Are you playing stupid?” Xu Bei pointed his finger at it, the little wolf’s bite was still firmly latched, it made no eye contact with him, he had to bend down and place a poke on the little wolf’s forehead, “What are you trying to do?”
Suddenly, the little wolf shook its head violently, with its immense strength, it threw Xu Bei off balence, his legs were swept off the ground, and he was forced to widen his stance. If he hadn’t been holding onto the door with his hand, he might have fallen into the splits.
Xu Bei has been pulled out of this form. To his surprise, the little wolf had yet to relent. Its was fully immersed in pulling him back inside, and even let out a low growl. Xu Bei was stubborn too, he gripped the door and refused to concede.
Every pull was met with resistance, his hold around the doorframe spurred on into a stalemate, a gaping hole in Xu Bei’s pants were accompanied by the sounds of the fabric being torn.
“You are really are something amazing!” Xu Bei wanted to land a flying kick on it, but because he had been lying down in bed for two days, his entire body, as a whole had no more strength than a bag of cotton. And on top of it all, despite the leg of his trouser being already completely torn, the little wolf had no intent to loosen the grip of its jaw. He was forced to slide down the doorframe into a sitting position on the ground, “Is it you that doesn’t want to go out, or do you not want to let me out?”
The little wolf still held his torn trouser legs in his mouth, there was an indiscernible look of anxiety in its eyes.
“Alrighty then,” Xu Bei did some thinking and pulled his trouser leg. With this finally tearing the piece off his pants entirely, the little wolf looked at him with the piece of cloth in its mouth, “We’ll just go to the supermarket at the mouth of the alley, buy the chocolates, and leave. You can tell me why you don’t want to let me leave afterwards, does that work?”
In the end, the little wolf hesitated and loosened its mouth. Xu Bei picked up the piece of cloth and held it up against his pants: “Hey… Ankle-length, you’re way too fucking capable…”
(TN: It says 1/9 pants which comes up around 1/4 of the calf, rising a good bit above the ankle. Which is also a bit of a pun on Lang Jiu’s name since the Jiu from his name is the same character you’d use for the number 9.)
During the Chinese New Year, the streets would be cold and cheerless, and shops do not open until the sixth day. There were also three or four supermarkets around Spider Lane. Xu Bei didn’t change out of his pants either, so he towed his torn pant leg along with him and led the little wolf as he slid down the stairs with his tried and true method, stealthily making his way out of the alley
The blanket of snow on the ground was extremely thick, there wasn’t a soul around to clear up the old alleyway. You’d have to wait for the families to feel bothered enough over the New Year, tired of eating greay food and need to lose weight, only then would someone come bearing a shovel and shovel a foot or so of the road. You’d have to consciously make your path as you go.
When Xu Bei had previously taken the little wolf to the supermarket, there was no one in the store, so he led the little wolf directly into the store. The sales associate was in the process of straightening out the shelves. After they had entered, they raised their hands and stood motionlessly in front of the shelves, staring at the little wolf with their mouth halfway opened, poised to speak.
Xu Bei knew that the little wolf had grown to be a bit more on the frightening side, so he stood at the door for a moment. If the associate said that big dogs wouldn’t be allowed to enter, he would have the little wolf stay outside for a minute. But after waiting for a hot minute, the associate still maintained that pose, there wasn’t any further indications either.
“Don’t bite anyone, be good,” Xu Bei gave a forced smile to the store associate, and led the little wolf around the store looking for chocolate, while talking to the little wolf in a hushed voice, “Try another flavor, how about you try the hazelnut flavor”
It wasn’t until he had finished picking the food to go checkout that the associate slowly asked, “Is this… a dog?”
“Yep, it’s a dog, it just has a large build.”
“What kind of dog is it, ah, it’s huge, it is vicious?” The shop assistant looked at the little wolf while holding the bag.
“…Uh, it’s a Great Pyrenees, not a vicious bone in its body.” Xu Bei stroked the little wolf’s head, and the little wolf immediately tilted its head in kind and nestled itself against Xu Bei’s leg.
“Oh, it’s pretty cute.”
Out of the supermarket, Xu Bei was overjoyed, he landed a kick on the little wolf’s rear: “Aiyo, didn’t see through it, you can put on quite the act, how cute is that… My little cutiepie, come and give your dad a smile.”
Failing to be bothered, the little wolf followed him across the street sticking close to his legs, its ears swiveling from left to right.
“Alright, let’s go home…” Xu Bei smiled and walked to the entrance of the alley. Although the little thing was irritating sometimes, he is still extremely glad to have it by his side most of the time.
The smile on Xu Bei’s face froze as soon as he reached the mouth of the alley before he had even turned in to enter.
There were two people standing in the alley, standing side by side, falling just short of holding hands. The alleyway was quite narrow, and they blocked halfway through the middle like a door panel.
Sweat broke out in the hollow of Xu Bei’s palm, these are Ban Datong’s people.
This uniform movements and black overcoat is also one of Ban Datong’s many sick and twisted tastes, they could be spotted from miles away.
“Fuck!” Xu Bei gritted his teeth and cursed, turning his head to look behind him. Sure enough, Ban Datong’s armored Hummer car slowly crept forward from God knows where, and rolled to a stop right behind him.
The little wolf obviously sensed the danger, and turned its body to the side, highly alert, the fur around the haunches of its neck slowly puffed up, its eyes fixed on the door of the Hummer as it slowly opened.
Ban Datong’s boots slipped out past the car door, firmly slamming down into the snow before a smile that nearly split his face in half grew on his face.
“What a lovely day, Xiao Bei,” Ban Datong spit out the butt-end of the cigarette in his mouth and ground his foot into it, “You chose such a good place to nurse yourself back to health. I went through fucking hell trying to find it, ah.”
Xu Bei didn’t say a word, the regret he felt was practically enough to make his intestines run green. The little wolf might have had a premonition that made it unwilling to let him out.
Moreover, he was in a hurry to go out, and he didn’t bring his knife. The chances of escape being as they are now were extremely slim…
“Ban-ge, Happy New Year,” Xu Bei smiled, looking at the several black coats that followed him from the Hummer, they blocked his escape route, “Is this how you’ve come to give me a red envelope?”
“Send fucking red envelopes, yeah, right. This is clearly my longing to see you again, ah.” Ban Datong smiled full of merry.
Xu Bei found that something was off after Ban Datong finished saying those words.
The several black coats weren’t armed with an identical array black steel pipes as they usually were. They were holding nets. Ban Datong has used a countless many strange things against Xu Bei, he’d even used mouse traps before, but he’d never used nets.
Xu Bei immediately understood, this was for the little wolf.
He never expected in his wildest dreams that Ban Datong’s target this time would be the little wolf. Suddenly, his heart fell into arrhythmic pulses that violently thundered like a disorderly stampede of horses.
The gears of his mind were turning at nearly impossible speeds. He couldn’t think of why Ban Datong suddenly wanted to take people to catch the little wolf, but if that was his aim, then there would still be a chance due to the absolutely astonishing speed that the little wolf possesses.
“Son,” Xu Bei raised his hand to cover his mouth, lowered his head and in a soft voice, gave a command to the little wolf, “When I tell you to run, just run, from the left…”
Before this command could be finished, Ban Datong moved his finger, and the several black clothes suddenly threw themselves over with their nets.
“Run!” Xu Bei was unable to give much more thought. He hit the little wolf’s ass with a kick, and at the same time, he took a few steps up and punched the face of the frontmost black coat.
The little wolf reacted quickly, evading the two nets, and in the span of one to two seconds had made it out of the encirclement, but stopped again. It realized that Xu Bei could not break through, and turned its head fully intending to run back.
“Run you idiot!” Xu Bei shouted with his full chest.
Yet another person got out of the Hummer. The person’s indifferent expression seemed to broadcast his wishes to remain uninvolved, but in his hand he held a slender silver tube.
Xu Bei had never seen this person before, but he recognized what he was holding.
That was a blowgun.
“Ban Datong, fuck your ancestors!” Xu Bei changed directions, he was unable to think about anything else, the foremost thing on his mind was taking that blowgun away from that person.
But the man who looked weak and even wore glasses raised his eyebrows and welcomed his approach. Before Xu Bei could determine what his next move was, he raised his hand and struck him on the side of his neck in a singular chopping motion.
The strength of his hand far exceeded Xu Bei’s imagination.
He felt the sky and earth spinning around as his knees lost their strength and he keeled over down onto the snow.
The little wolf was overtaken with rage, it raised his head and let out a chilling howl that struck a sense of dread into the trembling hearts of men, it leaped over the heads of several black coats like a zap of white lightning, and rushed towards the man.
As Xu Bei fell to the ground, he saw that the man had merely slighted his body off to the side, and with that, escaped the awe-inspiring speed of the little wolf in one move.
With all hope lost, Xu Bei fell into the snow, a black fog rolled out in front of him. Who is this…
In the split second he twisted his body off to the side to evade the little wolf, Lin Rui raised the blowgun in his hand.
The little wolf had yet to touch the ground before a gleam of light as thin and light as a silver thread had shot out from the tail end of the blowgun.
At very last, this day had come, Ban Datong had been waiting for an awfully long time.
