Your Kingdom - Arc 3 Chapter 5
“Eh, what happened?”
His subordinate said those words the first thing after he opened his mouth upon entering the office. Fernand who was so bored and seated on his desk, propped his chin on his hands and looked coldly towards his subordinate.
“What about work.”
“There’s no such thing for ‘today’. Weren’t you the one who told me to give you a day off on the following day after your return.”
“I changed my mind. Never mind that, hand me the work arranged for tomorrow. I’ll deal with the boring leftover business or whatever.”
“Did anything happen between you and that kid?”
Colonel Brandl took a small sigh, he leaned against his own desk and folded his arms.
“Then let me change the question. Did you do something outrageous to his body?”
“Well, more or less. But he woke up before me this morning and we even took a walk.”
“But he isn’t feeling well.”
“He is well. He looked happy to take care of the flower bed. He even finished his breakfast.”
Brandl went around his desk to sit down on his usual seat with a triumphant expression.
“Perhaps you don’t like that he’s feeling well. To be jealous, turns out you are also human after all.”
“No, wait, what do you mean? I’m supposed to be happy that he is feeling well. If he’s lying on his bed when I returned then it wouldn’t be a joke. For what purpose do you think I received reports from the estate regularly when I was away in the expedition site. It was to ensure that he’s always in good health.”
“I know. For that purpose you issued complicated orders to that capable butler. Unfortunately he didn’t even have time to breathe leisurely although his master was away.”
Fernand ignored his subordinate’s snide comment smoothly, as he decided to once again examine the mysterious feeling called ‘jealousy’ that was budding inside him.
He thought from the depth of his heart that it was a good sign that Licht was getting well and bright. But he clearly wasn’t happy at Licht’s newfound pleasure and friends during the last six months he had been away,
–to think that I am such a narrow-minded person….
He couldn’t calm down when Licht was out of his sight. Right now, he couldn’t help but wonder how much Licht thinks of him. Even though he was fine being apart for half a year until yesterday…he absolutely couldn’t go back to his state of mind before yesterday where he simply thought that Licht was waiting for him at the estate.
Fernand put his feet on the desk with a thud.
“I’d like to bring him here.”
“Huh? When I thought you would say something…you know this is an office, don’t you? not a place for dating.”
Brandl raised his voice in protest at his boss’ somewhat defiant attitude.
Fernand looked up coolly at his subordinate’s looming face.
“It’s all right if we let him do some work. He can read Lunan language.”
“Lunan language? Certainly there are some documents I collected during our recent expedition…”
“Seems like he more or less understands the ancient language of Lunan. He said his wet nurse taught him before.”
Brandl displayed his interest for the first time.
“That may be useful.”
“But he can’t read or write in common language.”
“We will be able to manage somehow…but there is no space to put extra desk in this room.”
“Remove the books and documents that block the space.”
“Certainly. On this occasion, you won’t mind if I throw away that poorly designed chandelier as well, right?”
“Do as you please.”
Brandl nodded in satisfaction. Since he finally got the chance to demolish said chandelier.
A week had passed since that conversation came out, and finally Licht turned up in Fernand’s office.
Since the Royal Prince who was feared as the highest commanding officer of ice was bringing along his favorite mistress, the atmosphere in the fort was in turmoil. People was interested, but if they showed interest beyond what was needed, their heads would literally fly…the soldiers who didn’t want to incur the wrath of their god-like superior officer nervously greeted Fernand, who rode the horse carriage up to the fort’s gates despite usually rode on a horseback.
“What is this?”
“We received an order for reception from Colonel Brandl.”
Usually there were two gatekeepers greeting them, but today, more soldiers were on the watch. He wondered if by any chance they were doubling as escorts, but since Fernand personally thought that was impossible, he only raised his eyebrows in confusion.
Next to Fernand, Licht who was wearing a dark green coat looked up curiously at the building with imposing appearance in front of him.
–For the time being, he doesn’t look scared.
Fernand took Licht’s hand, they passed through the building gate, and went across the rustic, stone-paved dim corridors to head to the office. Fernand sometimes checked Licht’s condition, but he was just calmly stroking his chest down.
Licht who had been silent until just now, suddenly spouted out some unexpected words.
“I’m feeling somewhat nostalgic here…I wonder if it’s because this place looks similar to where I used to live.”
